My words fly up, my thoughts remain below.
A-frame   A wave with a definite peak that breaks both left and right causing an "A" of whitewash.
Backside   Surfing with your back to the face of a wave. Opposite of Frontside.
Bailing   Jumping off your surfboard. Should always be done as safely and gracefully as possible!
Barrel   The tube-like section of a fast wave that curls onto itself: aka tubular, pipe, or the green room.
Chesterman
aka Chestie
Chesterman Beach is a three kilometre long sandy beach in Tofino. Like Long Beach everyone's heard about Chesterman. It has two main sections: North Chestie and South and is a great surfing beach. North gets some big waves ala Cox in the winter especially, but you'll usually always find a section to surf on Chesterman Beach. South can be a sweet place to learn to surf if the wind is right and it's a popluar spot to hang out.
Choppy   Rough water caused by wind (usually onshore) and opposite of glassy.
Closeout   A wave that crashes all at once and provides no green face for a surfer to ride.
Cox   Cox Bay, Cox Beach. This beach usually has the biggest most powerful surf in Tofino.
There are two parking spots to get down to Cox. 1. Cox Rocks - north section of the beach. Turn into 1431 Resort and there is a parking lot, washrooms and a nice path down to the north end of the beach. 2. Cox Sauce - mid section of the beach. The older parking spot is located just past there. Hang a right at Maltby Road and drive down until you see cars parked. There's a parking lot and the path will take you to the mid-section of the beach. There is a washroom down by the beach at this end.
The biggest surf is usually closer to the north end by Cox Rocks.
Curl   The top lip of a wave.
Ding   Sad Surfboard. A dent or scrape on your beautiful surfboard. Flesh heals, surfboards don't.
Dropping In   1) The instant you stand on your board and ride down the wave face.
2) A Bad Thing - when one surfer breaks surf etiquette by dropping in on another surfer's wave.
Learn how not to do this. If you do this - apologize and access your abilities for the situation.
Eating It   Oooooooooo - Wipe Out! Falling, usually not gracefully, off your surfboard.
Face   The green slope of an unbroken wave.
Flat   No surf.
Frontside   Riding with your front to the wave. Opposite of Backside.
Glassy   Smooth water, resembling "glass" caused by no wind, or light offshore wind. Ideal surf conditions.
Gnarley   difficult (as explained by Kelly Slater on PBS). As in - 'Wow Nina, that was gnarly!"
Goofy   A surfer who pops up and rides with her left foot at the back. Opposite of Regular or Normal.
Grom   A young surfer - girl or boy.
Hang-Five   A surfer riding her longboard with five toes of one foot hanging over the front of the surfboard.
Cool longboard trick.
Hang-Ten   A surfer riding her longboard with all ten toes hanging over the front of the surfboard.
Very cool longboard trick.
HTH   Hope This Helps - more a net term than a surfing one
Impact Zone   The area where the waves are breaking and there is a lot of white water.
Kickout   Ending your ride by turning your surfboard quickly at the top of the wave. Very sweet.
Left   A wave that breaks from left to right when looking from shore
Line Up   Area where surfers position themselves to catch the waves.
Long Beach   A beautiful stretch of beach about 20km from Tofino, in the Pacific Rim National Park.
Mushy   Situation where waves have little power in them and are just falling over.
Normal   A surfer who pops up and rides with her right foot at the back. Aka Regular. Opposite of Goofy.
Does not mean that you are a normal person :)
North   North Chesterman's beach. Good surfing and a great hang out spot. Closest to town.
Off The Lip   When a rider surfs to the top of the wave, then she pulls a quick turn. Cool short boarding trick.
Offshore Wind   Wind blowing from the ocean to the shore.
Onshore Wind   Wind blowing from the shore to the ocean.
Open An Account   Getting on the score board during a surf competition.
Peak   1) Highest part of a wave that rises and breaks first.
2) Conditions that are just about perfect.
Pearling   Yuk! When the nose of your surfboard goes underwater when you're trying to catch a wave. It happens to all of us at some point and you never want it to happen again.
Period   Distance between two wave peaks. See wavelength.
Pop Up   The graceful motion of moving from lying on your surfboard to standing on it.
Regular   A surfer who pops up and rides with her right foot at the back. Aka Normal. Opposite of Goofy.
Right   A wave that breaks from right to left when looking from shore.
Rosie's   Rosie Bay. A small beach between South Chesterman and Cox Bay accessible only from South or over the point from Cox.
Shoulder   The green unbroken section of the wave adjacent to the broken section.
Soup   The white water area in front of a broken wave.
South   South Chesterman's beach. Usually smaller waves. Popular hang out spot.
Stoked   Happiness. Joy. Sense of Accomplishment.
Stringer   The strip that runs vertically down the center of your surfboard.
Swell   Energy in open ocean, creating coastal surf. The wave height.
TBC   To Be Continued - another net term rather than a surfing one
Wavelength   1) Distance between two wave peaks. May also be called the wave period.
2) A great album by Van Morrison.
Whitewash   A wave that's broken, also known as wash, foam, soup. Good place for beginners to learn to ride. The wash picks you up, instead of you having to catch it, and you can paddle a couple of strokes then jump up.
Wick   Wickaninnish beach. About 35km from Tofino and 10km from the turnoff. A long beach that usually brings in a good size wave. Closest big surf beach from Ucluelet. Also in the Pacific Rim National Park.
